We attended the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (ISO) at Clowes Hall on Thursday morning and witnessed a magnificent performance of the Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto by the orchestra and a young lady soloist - Ms. Khatia Buniatshvili.
It occurred to us to wonder why this marvelous asset of the city had to be evicted from the downtown area if we really are trying to put our best foot forward for visitors.
The "late night talk show" could have sold more tickets at Clowes Hall, which would have been a lot more convenient for the local folks who might be interested is seeing the production of a TV show they watch, without having to drive into the traffic/parking fiasco downtown. And, of course, this would have left an opening for possibly two or three downtown concerts by the ISO. Just a thought.

Speaking of tickets, this morning’s paper carries a full page listing of events leading up to The Football Game. Most are indoors and carry ticket prices from $10 right up to four digits. We saw one free party at the Pepsi Coliseum, with most of the rest of the freebies being at Georgia Street. Did anyone take out weather insurance on a week of outdoor parties in Indianapolis in February?
Just as an aside, since we assume most of these big bashes are actually being billed as related to The Football Game, we wonder what cut the NFL is getting off these ticket prices for use of their logo! Is there any municipal revenue being generated here? Just asking.

A couple of days ago we were told - under the headline "Mayor gets serious about improving schools" - that he has announced plans "...to create a new cabinet post: deputy mayor of education."
We didn’t see any specific reference to how this brand new governmental operation would be financed. We’re wondering whether he has concocted some new scheme for further diversion of TIF dollars from their legislatively defined purpose. What next?
As to the mayor creating a new deputy mayor just what could that position accomplish? Yes the mayor can create charter schools but he hasn't any authority over schools, in Indiana that authority belongs to the local school boards. So other than a sound bite and a feel good moment for the mayor we are just whizzing away more money on a deputy mayor who hasn't the power to change a thing. In retrospect that sounds about right for this city.
