We congratulate the editors on running the "dueling columnists" concerning the Georgia Street boondoggle in Sunday morning’s paper. Unfortunately, the actual subject matter was limited to whether we should or should not re-name that 3-block portion of the street subject to mutation.
We are delighted to welcome Mr. Tully to our side of the street - even if it’s only 3 blocks of Georgia street. Most of his column is devoted to an eloquent statement concerning the fact that Indianapolis has a severe inferiority complex.
He says, in part, "Indianapolis already has an identity and a sense of place, and the soon-to-be-renovated Georgia Street will only add to that. We don’t need to chase our tails in search of a fluffy manufactured image." Amen, Matt!!
Mr. Tully told us some time ago that he doesn’t read this blog. It’s probably just as well. We’ve made the same point several times, and he might not have been moved to do it so beautifully if he had read our inadequate efforts. At any rate, we really are happy that there is some point of agreement.
We do regret that the there is only one fleeting reference to the fact that federal tax dollars are a major part of the project funding. Considering the national situation, we would have enjoyed reading his reaction to that situation.
One other point. We do hope the other half of the "dueling columnists" concept has studied Mr. Tully’s column and has reconsidered her plea for the "fluffy manufactured image" she seems so set on.
Of course it's Federal Money, NOT taxpayers money. I'm surprised Gov. Daniels hasn't objected to the Federal spending involved. But hey, if other states can waste Federal $$$, why can't we. The Chinese stand ready to loan more money for Georgia (err...Chairman Mao Street)as long as our foreign policy meets their standards.
